Cardinals recall Carlson, name Ponce de Leon 29th man for doubleheader

Outfielder Dylan Carlson is back and pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon is active for today’s game, the St. Louis Cardinals announced Friday.

Carlson, the team’s top prospect, was optioned to the team’s alternate training site in Springfield on Sept. 8 after batting .162 with one home run and five RBIs in 74 at-bats in his first big-league call-up. The team wanted to give him an opportunity to regain his batting stroke.

Ponce de Leon was named the 29th man for Friday’s doubleheader in Pittsburgh. The move was expected because he is slated to start the second game.

To make room on the roster for Carlson, the Cardinals optioned infielder Max Schrock to Springfield.
