Cards closer Hicks has torn UCL

ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Cardinals will have to figure out their closer situation after an MRI revealed Monday that Jordan Hicks has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Hicks, the Cardinals’ hard-throwing right-hander, was removed from Saturday’s game against the Angels in the ninth inning.

Hicks, 22, is 2-2 with a 3.14 ERA and team-high 14 saves in 29 games this season. He struck out 31 batters over 28.2 innings.

The only other Cardinals to have earned a save this season are John Gant (three), Carlos Martínez  (two) and Andrew Miller, Tyler Webb and Dakota Hudson (one each).
