NFL Top 100: Mahomes ranked too low on list, Wright says

The NFL’s Top 100 list for 2022 has been officially determined, and while the unveiling of the compilation is finished, the conversation surrounding it has just begun.

The top-three players on the countdown surprised very few: Tom Brady, Aaron Donald and Aaron Rodgers. And while most didn’t have a problem with the names that appeared on top of the list, FOX Sports personality Nick Wright believed there was one glaring omission from the top three.

“In what f****** world is Patrick Mahomes the eighth-best player in football?” Wright questioned disconcertedly on the “What’s Wright?” podcast.

“Here are the rankings that he’s had since he’s been in the league: 2019, they ranked him fourth, that next year … [he was fourth], after winning the Super Bowl, they ranked him fourth again. Last year, they had him No. 1, rightfully. And now they’ve dropped him to eighth.

“Ranking Patrick Mahomes as the eighth-best player in football, in my estimation, invalidates the entire list. You bet your ass there will be a moment this year he throws up eight fingers. He might try to break the record and have an eight TD game just for being ranked eighth.”

ESPN recently released a Top 100 NFL players list as well, where Mahomes ranked No. 1.

“Mahomes is a great playmaker in part because of his ability to complete unconventional throws,” ESPN NFL Nation reporter Adam Teicher wrote. “He has completed passes without looking at his intended receiver, throwing left-handed and in numerous other unorthodox ways. No other quarterback has produced like him through 63 career starts, and he is primed for another big season.”

Many believe Mahomes will have a much harder time putting up gaudy numbers without Tyreek Hill, but if we’ve learned anything about Mahomes throughout his career, it’s that he keeps a long registry of disrespectful oversights in the back of his mind.
