Packers post-free agency 2021 mock draft roundup

Mock drafts really start to take shape this time of year. After all, the ones in January and February come before any transactions are made.

With the start of the league year, players are cut and free agents signed and/or lost. Green Bay is no different … albeit perhaps on a smaller scale than other teams.

The Packers said goodbye to linebacker Christian Kirksey and offensive tackle Rick Wagner, who were cut, and center Corey Linsley and running back Jamaal Willams, who signed with other teams. While Green Bay hasn’t dipped into the free-agent market, it did re-sign several players, most notably running back Aaron Jones, cornerback Kevin King and tight end Marcedes Lewis.

Those moves could well affect Green Bay’s plans in this year’s NFL draft, at least in the early rounds.

Thanks to compensatory picks, the Packers will have 10 selections in the upcoming draft, one in at least each round with two apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth.

Most mocks, of course, just concern themselves with the first round (we’ve noted below which ones do multiple rounds).

In predicting the Packers’ first-round selection at No. 29 overall, there isn’t much of a consensus. Of course, picking later in the first round will lead to a bigger variety of choices. In fact, it’s nearly split down the middle as to if Green Bay will take a defensive or offensive player in the first round. As you will see, however, a few players stand out over others.

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com: Landon Dickerson, C, Alabama. “Dickerson is the best pure interior offensive lineman available. I thought he might fall out of the first round after his ACL injury, but it appears his recovery is going smoothly. He can step in following the departure of Corey Linsley.”

Peter Schrager of NFL.com: Nick Bolton, LB, Missouri. “Joe Barry is the new DC and his specialty is LB play. I’m not sure GB’s defense didn’t miss Blake Martinez roaming the middle in big games last year. Bolton isn’t going to jump off the page with eye-popping athleticism, but everyone says he’ll be the QB of whichever defense he joins.”

Ben Standig of The Ringer: Landon Dickerson, G/C, Alabama. “Put me down as a believer: The Packers will once again ignore Aaron Rodgers’ hopes and dreams of adding a wide receiver on Day 1. They can avoid any further talk of a rift with the three-time league MVP by drafting one on Day 2 or selecting Bateman with this pick. Wide receivers are plentiful in this draft class, which is why there’s value in taking the first center. Green Bay lost former starter Corey Linsley in free agency.”

Vinnie Iyer of the Sporting News: Zaven Collins, LB, Tulsa. “Collins can play inside or outside and the Packers need more second-level ground coverage against pass and run in their 3-4. He explodes as an athlete and can make a lot of plays with his agility, quickness and range.”

Chris Trapasso of CBSSports.com (2 rounds): Trevon Moehrig, S, TCU. “The Packers simply go best player available here with Moehrig, the consensus top safety in the class.”; Round 2 – Jabril Cox, LB, LSU.

Tom Fornelli of CBSSports.com: Terrace Marshall Jr., WR, LSU. “Aaron Rodgers is seen fainting as the Packers use a first-round pick on a receiver for him. Seriously, Marshall strikes me as an excellent complement to Davante Adams and makes the Packers offense even more dangerous than it already is.”

Ben Linsley of Pro Football Focus: Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama. “Defensive line is not the first need that comes to mind for Green Bay. However, Barmore — the 15th-ranked player on PFF’s Big Board — is not the kind of player the Packers should pass on to force a need. Outside of Kenny Clark, Green Bay has struggled to find someone who can give them consistent snaps between the tackles over the last several years. Barmore can line up in several different spots inside and disrupt as a run defender and pass-rusher. He’s coming off a 90.0 overall grade with Alabama in 2020.”
