Reds acquire pitcher Jeff Hoffman in trade with Rockies

CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Reds Vice President, General Manager Nick Krall Wednesday announced the acquisitions of RHP Jeff Hoffman and minor league RHP Case Williams from the Colorado Rockies for RHP Robert Stephenson and minor league OF Jameson Hannah.

Hoffman, 27, originally was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first round with the ninth overall pick of the June 2014 first-year player draft. At the July 2015 trade deadline he was traded to the Rockies, along with SS Jose Reyes, RHP Miguel Castro and RHP Jesus Tinoco, for SS Troy Tulowitzki and RHP LaTroy Hawkins.

In 5 seasons with the Rockies, Hoffman made 38 starts and 30 relief appearances, including a career-high 16 appearances out of the bullpen over the 60-game season in 2020.

Williams, 18, was selected by the Rockies in the fourth round with the 110th pick of this summer’s abbreviated first-year player draft out of Douglas County High School in Castle Rock, about 35 miles south of Denver. Before signing with Colorado, he was committed to attend Santa Clara (CA) University.

Stephenson, 27, was selected by the Reds in the first round (27th overall) of the June 2011 first-year player draft. He posted a 5.15 ERA in 22 starts and 82 relief appearances over 5 Major League seasons.

Hannah, 23, was acquired by the Reds at the July 2019 trade deadline from the Oakland Athletics for RHP Tanner Roark. He originally was selected by the A’s in the second round of the June 2018 first-year player draft.
