Royals activate Bubic for home opener start, put Griffin on 60-day IL

Rookie Kris Bubic already had been announced as the starter for the Royals in their home opener Friday, so it was no surprise when he was selected to the major league roster from their alternate training site roster prior to the game.

In a corresponding move, the Royals transferred left-hander Foster Griffin to the 60-day injured list, effectively ending his 2020 season. Griffin left his major league debut Monday with a left forearm strain, though he did earn the win over the Tigers.

In addition, the Royals placed right-hander Jorge López on the bereavement/family medical emergency list.

Bubic, 22, pitched for Class A Lexington and Class A (Advanced) Wilmington last season, where he led all minor leaguers with 185 strikeouts. The left-hander was selected 40th overall in the 2018 MLB draft, part of a strong class of Royals prospects including Brady Singer, Jackson Kowar and Daniel Lynch.
