Twins acquire infielder Vargas from Diamondbacks

The Minnesota Twins acquired infielder Ildemaro Vargas from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations.

More Twins coverage

Vargas will have to quarantine and the Twins will make a corresponding move to the 28-man roster when he’s eligible to be added.

The 29-year-old Vargas was designated for assignment by Arizona last Thursday after appearing in eight games this season, going 3-for-20. Vargas played in 92 games in 2019, batting .269 with six home runs. He appeared in 126 games overall with the Diamondbacks from 2017-20.

Vargas has played all over the infield in his brief career, with 56 games at second base, 20 at third, five at both shortstop and first and two in the outfield.

In addition, the Twins reinstated Willians Astudillo from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to the alternate training site. The Twins player pool is now at the 60-man limit.
